Why we focus on behaviour

10–15% of crashes. Only 10 to 15 per cent of road traffic accidents are attributable to inadequate road furniture. The vast majority result from road user behaviour. The VVI therefore emphasises education, enforcement and awareness.

What we stand for

Three core tasks, one national goal

The VVI connects policy, implementation and data in the field of road safety in Suriname.

Coordinate

We bring together ministries, the police, healthcare, education and civil society partners around a single national approach.

Inform & educate

From nursery school pupils to professional drivers: lifelong road safety education and campaigns that truly change behaviour.

Data & monitoring

We collect and analyse accident data from the KPS and the AZP and measure progress in policy implementation.

International conceptual framework

The Safe System approach

People make mistakes. A safe road traffic system ensures that a mistake need not be fatal. The VVI translates this international framework into the five pillars of the Strategic Plan.

Statement by the VVI

Rely more on your brakes than on your rights.
