Programmes that make a difference on the road

Together with its partners, the VVI implements programmes that intervene where the most casualties occur: among moped riders, young people, pedestrians and in commercial transport.

    Road Safety Month "15-15"

Annual nationwide campaign month from 15 August to 15 September.

The 2026 edition runs from 15 August to 15 September with the theme "Do not act recklessly on the road". The month opened with a 5-kilometre walk and will close with the presentation of the road safety dashboard. The previous edition in 2025 was the thirteenth and had the theme "No hurry is worth a life"; it included a billboard project launched by the President.

    Moped certification

Certification and registration programme for moped riders; registration began in October 2024.

Year after year, moped riders make up the largest group of road traffic casualties. Compulsory certification and registration give them demonstrable riding skills and enable enforcement.

    Road safety education in schools

A permanent subject in all year groups at GLO schools from the coming school year.

The curriculum has been developed jointly with the ministerie van Onderwijs. Following the pilot at 30 schools in Paramaribo, Wanica, Para, Commewijne and Nickerie, road safety education will become a permanent subject in all year groups at GLO schools from the coming school year. At VOJ level, the subject will be linked to a moped certificate: those who pass the examination will be eligible for one. Please note: such a certificate is not a driving licence. Driving lessons and a driving licence remain compulsory for driving a car, and practical training must still be undertaken at a driving school. For VOS, a link with driving schools' theory instruction is being considered; discussions with driving schools on this are ongoing. The training of junior road safety wardens by the Korps Politie Suriname ceased after 2020; the VVI's permanent road safety education replaces this with a structured programme.

Road safety education for crèches and nursery schools

A manual with seven themes introduced to the youngest children through play.

The topics are traffic rules, road signs, traffic lights, crossing the road, speed, alcohol and the importance of a driving licence. The programme was piloted at Kinderdagverblijf & Peuterschool Emelina, together with the Korps Politie Suriname. Approximately 150 nursery staff members have recently been trained; from October 2026, road safety education will be a permanent part of the programme at nurseries.

    Defensive Driving Training

Further training in defensive driving for bus drivers.

The first cohort of bus drivers was certified in November 2025. The training focuses on hazard awareness, choosing appropriate speeds and responsible driving in passenger transport. The VVI is working with the ministerie van Transport, Communicatie en Toerisme on a scheme under which a Defensive Driving certificate will become a requirement before anyone may carry passengers as a bus driver.

    Traffic controller training

The minister has given the go-ahead for the training of traffic enforcement officers — according to the VVI, its highest priority at present.

The Minister of Justice and Security has given the go-ahead for the training of traffic enforcement officers to support the Korps Politie Suriname in enforcement. According to the VVI, this is currently the highest priority. The officers will be deployed at events, school zones and busy junctions, freeing up police capacity for enforcement.

  • Reflective safety vests being distributed to police and delivery riders
    Ongoing

    Safety Vest Project

Together with Gow2 Suriname, 1,300 reflective vests have been distributed.

The vests were distributed to police officers, the Biker's Unit of the Korps Brandweer and delivery riders — groups that spend considerable time on the road, often in the dark.

  • Ongoing

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

Annual walk in November in remembrance of road traffic victims.

The commemoration gives bereaved families a platform and keeps the public conversation about road safety alive.

    Data dashboard

The VVI's public data dashboard has been live since 26 August 2026, at dashboard.vvi.sr.

The dashboard provides access to crash data from the Korps Politie Suriname and the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo, which supply their figures directly. Thirteen data partners are connected. Trends by district, road user type and time of day are immediately visible; the dashboard contains no personal data, only aggregated figures with their source and reference date.

Road safety for road users who speak other languages

Information and certification also in Spanish, for the growing group of e-bike and e-scooter users who speak other languages.

A growing group of road users who speak other languages use e-bikes and e-scooters. The VVI therefore aims to offer information and certification in Spanish as well, so that this group also knows the traffic rules and can use the roads with certification.

Do you know your road signs?

  • Stop
  • Maximum speed 50
  • Give way
  • Pedestrian crossing
  • Children
  • Safety helmet compulsory
  • No overtaking
  • Alcohol and road use do not mix

Road signs are not decorations — they save lives. From 1 January 2027, safety helmets are compulsory for moped, e-bike and e-scooter riders. Read more about the legislation.
